What do I post today...
Five years ago our lives changed. We love to wave our flag and talk about the victory over the terrorists, but to be honest, they took away a certain innocence that we all shared. For example, no longer can you board a plane with a bottle of water or baby formula. We have to go down to the Post Office and produce IDs to our best friends that we've known forever before we can get our mail. And God forbid that you happen to bad-mouth the president like the Dixie Chicks did.
Five years ago, our country had more freedom than it does today, and the terrorists took that away. I'm mourning for the loss.
More than anything, though, I'm paying my respects today for the men and women who died on that horrible day five years ago. The brave souls in law enforcement and fire fighting who climbed the steps of the twin towers were much like those men who landed on the Normandy coast - they knew the risk, and were willing to accept it.
People on both the left and right have made careers out of criticizing the other side, and to those folks, I say, "shame on you". The fireman climbing the stairwell of Tower #1 when it collapsed wasn't a Republican or a Democrat; a Christian, Jew or Muslim; white, black, brown or yellow; he wasn't a college grad or a high school dropout. For all purposes, he was just an American doing his job. God forbid that when all is said and done, the rest of us are graded on the same scale as him.
God bless America, 9/11/2006
